Description: For over 150 years, the James P. White House has been an impossible sight to ignore and as a stately bed & breakfast, it's a haven for guests looking for distinctive accommodations to meet their traveling needs. The man who built it, James Patterson White, and the man who designed it, Calvin Ryder, conspired to make the house one of the most dramatic in Maine. Your hosts are committed in every way, from the comfortable but elegant surroundings to the personal service, that will ensure every guest leaves wanting to return. Belfast is an architectural jewel on the mid-coast. Calvin Ryder created a uniquely complex design that places The White House among the top Greek Revival homes in Maine. As the cornerstone in Ryder's career, it remains the masterpiece of the prestigious architect's work, and The White House proudly holds the honor of being one of the most photographed homes on Maine's coast. You'll admire the graceful symmetry, temple-like facade, and crowning ornamentation of the eight-sided cupola. The picture perfect parlors and library are designed for our guests' relaxation and enjoyment. There are several quiet intimate settings for those who just want to sit and savor the day's experience of exploring Belfast and the coast.

The White House was the first Inn in Belfast to be licensed by the city to allow its facilities to be used to host weddings, receptions and other functions. One innkeeper is also commissioned by the state to officiate wedding ceremonies. We would be delighted to discuss details. To complete the serene milieu, a park-like triangle of grounds and gardens surrounds the regal home. You'll be in awe of the huge copper beech tree- the largest in Maine. It spreads its lofty branches to shade the terrace that provides guests a back-to-nature setting to enjoy views of the gardens. Guests may use the terrace as a starting point to stroll to the tip of the grounds to view the lacily arched gazebo, built around the mid-1800's. You can either stop there to relax in the tranquil setting or continue walking to take in harbor views, which are just three blocks away or follow the walking tour map to enjoy the historic district's fine examples of Greek Revival, Queen Anne, Federal, and Italianate homes. A short walk to downtown, and you will find many fine restaurants, shops, galleries, and picturesque harbor views to enhance your visit.

Other Amenities: The home's interior is as beautiful as its outside with ornate plaster ceiling medallions, marble fireplaces, and intricate moldings. Every attention to detail has been made to ensure our guests' comfort. From finely-appointed guest rooms featuring king/queen/twin beds and luxurious linens in the private baths to early morning coffee to an Epicurean's delight, a graciously-served gourmet breakfast. Hearty lunch baskets, made to order on request, are sure to please the appetite on day trips to explore the coast and countryside.

Local calls are complimentary, long-distance calling requires a calling card with an 800 number access. A TV/VCR may be reserved (based upon availability) to watch movies from our general-appeal video collection. Some guest rooms are equipped with cable and a TV/VCR.
