Description: Adams House Bed & Breakfast Inn was built as a private home in 1902 in San Antonio, Texas in what is now known as the King William Historic District. Adams House Bed & Breakfast Inn maintains, to this day, the tradition of Southern welcome that characterized turn-of-the-century Texas hospitality. The King William historic district is on the south edge of downtown San Antonio, Texas. It takes only 10 minutes to walk from the Adams House Bed & Breakfast Inn to the heart of the river walk.
History: The Adams house was built in 1902 by Carl and Otto Schulze, two brothers from Germany who owned a planing mill and architectural wood-working business in San Antonio. Most of the wood trim and decorative scroll work that adorns houses built at the turn of the century in King William was made by the Schulze company. Adams House is a showplace of finely crafted red pine woodwork. Because the East Texas long-leaf pine forest has been completely cut, the house is irreplacable. Wood to make the trim and molding simply does not exist today. The soaring three-story house gracefully wears the beauty of another era. (By the way, the period fainting couch in this picture is no longer in the house.) The Adams House was Otto Schulze' home until his death in 1926. Mrs. Schulze (nee Pauline Jenner) continued to live in the house until her death in 1941.
In 1943, the Schulze heirs sold the house to the recently widowed Katherine Kleck who lived here with her son, two daughters, and grandson. Mrs. Kleck died in 1985. The house sat vacant until 1988 when it was purchased by Betty Lancaster and Harold Fuchs. Betty and Harold spent several years completely restoring the house to its current condition. They replaced the electric wiring, installed three separate air conditioning systems and upgraded the plumbing, installing baths in each bedroom. They also re-built the carriage house, converting it into a mini-apartment. The grounds were completely replanted into the gardens that grace the house today. Nora Peterson and Richard Green purchased the house in November of 1997, and moved into an empty house on December 2, 1997. We feverishly furnished the house, as guests were coming on December 10! The furnishing continues to this day, as we replace some of the early acquisitions with better pieces. As a result, the furnishing of the various rooms change as we upgrade, trade and just move stuff around. (If there is any man who likes moving furniture--let your wife buy a bed and breakfast inn!)
We recently had the pleasure of a visit by Peter Kleck and Michael Sanders, Katherine Kleck's son and grandson. They were able to fill in many of the details of the history and construction of the house as they reminised about old times. Michael chose to stay in the O.Henry Room which was his room when he visited his grandmother. (Of course the room had no name during the Kleck years--naming rooms is an affectation of us B&B owners!)
Other Amenities: Adams House is equipped with central heat and air conditioning as well as high ceilings and circulating fans in each room. All guest rooms are tastefully appointed in beautiful antiques. Each guest room features color cable television (with HBO), telephone, queen size bed (except the Pecan Room, which has a full size bed), and private bath (two rooms, the Verandah Room and the 1902 Carriage House each have a two person jacuzzi). |
